One of my favorite ways to photograph families is to join them in their home environment where they can be truly themselves – and this candid in home family session with Taylor, Sam, and their adorable one year old is a perfect example of why I love these type of sessions so much! Taylor and Sam booked this session to capture some cute one-year photos of their firstborn, Shepherd, and cute doesn’t even begin to describe how delightful this little kid was.
Life with a young child is all about constant motion and I made it my mission to capture that motion as it unfolded. From quiet moments cuddling on the couch with Sam to the moments of uncontainable laughter at something silly Taylor did, the little expressions we were able to capture with Shepherd were priceless. Calm inquisitiveness, wild laughter, mournful tears, unashamed silliness – it was all there.
And that’s what life with a one year old is really like, right? It’s not always calm and collected, quiet and serene. One moment you’re casually reading a book on the couch – the next you’re cleaning cheerios up off the floor after your well-meaning child tried to eat the entire bowl in one sloppy bite. Sometimes there’s exuberant laughter, other times endless tears. The pendulum can swing from peaceful to chaotic in mere seconds. It’s messy, crazy, inspiring, and beautiful all at the same time and getting to document that magical, loving, diligent process with this beautiful family was nothing short of a complete privilege.
“When you hold your baby in your arms the first time, and you think of all the things you can say and do to influence him, it’s a tremendous responsibility. What you do with him can influence not only him, but everyone he meets and not for a day or a month or a year but for time and eternity.”
